Thank you, but the topic is far richer than I presented in <5 min. I suspect that relatively few toxicologists have carefully examined Paracelsus’s “Third Defense” in the context of his discussion of new prescriptions. That omission matters, because the passage is frequently quoted without its surrounding purpose. I have also considered whether some interpretive drift stems from translation issues. Early New High German differs meaningfully from modern German and subtle shifts lost in translation do influence how his ideas are understood.

The Deichmann analysis was, in many ways, a breath of fresh air but not without limitations. Interpretations of Paracelsus tend to polarize: some elevate him uncritically, while others attempt a more fair assessment. I fall closer to the latter. The familiar rendering “the dose makes the poison” is arguably an oversimplification; in the context of the Third Defense, “the dose makes the remedy” may better capture his emphasis. That it is a defense in unmistakable, but the distinction is not trivial suggesting toxicants could be used beneficially in medicine.

There are also recurring attempts to link Paracelsus (Philippus Theophrastus Aureolus Bombastus von Hohenheim) to later traditions such as naturopathy and homeopathy. While these connections are often overstated, they are not entirely unfounded. Both Paracelsus and Hahnemann, for example, can be loosely associated with ideas resembling the “Law of Similars” (similia similibus curentur), the use of single remedies, and attention to minimal dosing. That said, core features of homeopathy like potentization and succussion are uniquely Hahnemann’s.

Paracelsus’s oft-cited statement— nil sine veneno, praesertim dosi non servari (“nothing is without poison, especially if the dose is not observed” (Note: I (others) shouldn't use latin making the error of the early German roots, just an opinion) is followed immediately by “every food substance and every drink is poisonous when ingested above its dose; this has been proven by the effects” is also widely unknown and unappreciated.

Maybe I'm stretching, but read together, these lines suggest thinking in a broader framework that extends beyond pharmacology into what we would now recognize as principles of food safety and exposure science. In that sense, Paracelsus can reasonably be viewed as an early contributor to the conceptual foundations of dose-response thinking across both toxicology and nutrition. Maybe I'm becoming less of a critic ...
